WAIC 2026: Five emerging trends shaping the AI landscape

Spanning computing infrastructure and smart terminals, factory floors and urban neighborhoods, youth entrepreneurship and global governance, the 2026 World AI Conference (WAIC) and High-Level Meeting on Global AI Governance has once again served as a vital window into the evolution of the AI industry.

Now in its ninth year, WAIC has outgrown its origins as a mere showcase for cutting-edge technology. Held in Shanghai from July 17 to 20, the event has matured into a proving ground for industrial applications, a launchpad for emerging developers, and a premier platform for global governance dialogue. Through the lens of this year's conference, five defining trends shaping the future of AI have come into sharp focus.

Trend 1: Full-stack infrastructure takes center stage to drive innovation

The most striking signal from WAIC 2026 is the heightened concentration and systemic nature of industry innovation.

For the first time, the exhibition area exceeded 100,000 square meters, featuring over 1,100 companies and more than 3,000 exhibits, including over 300 global product debuts. The expanded footprint, greater number of exhibits, and denser product launches reflect the accelerating expansion of the entire AI industry chain.

Beyond "star products" like large language models (LLMs) and humanoid robots, this year's conference put the spotlight on the foundational stack powering the industry.

Huawei unveiled the Atlas 950 SuperPoD, an industry-leading AI supernode that marks a major leap in computing infrastructure for the Agentic AI era. By interconnecting thousands of AI chips via high-speed protocols, the system enables them to operate seamlessly as a single, unified computer.

Meanwhile, Chinese tech company Dawning Information Industry Co., Ltd. (Sugon) unveiled a 100,000-card AI supercluster, standing as one of China's largest and most advanced systems dedicated to AI for Science (AI4S).

In the chip sector, Shanghai-based startup Oriental Compute Core Technology showcased a software-defined, near-memory 3D AI chip built on a fully domestic supply chain. This breakthrough will help China's high-end computing sector reduce its reliance on advanced manufacturing processes. Similarly, Chinese GPU maker MetaX showcased specialized GPUs tailored for AI4S, providing targeted computing power for cutting-edge fields like life sciences and materials science.

The narrative has shifted from competing over individual models and GPUs to mastering the entire infrastructure ecosystem. The competitive edge is no longer about who owns the single fastest chip, but who can first deploy a highly collaborative, continuously evolving, next-generation computing foundation.

Trend 2: Hardware-software integration makes AI tangible, interactive

This year's WAIC placed a heavy premium on user experience and real-world immersion. Attendees were no longer just watching tech demos from behind barriers; they were interacting firsthand with AI that is tangible, intuitive, and highly perceptive.

Smart terminals are rapidly diversifying far beyond smartphones into AI glasses, toys, and musical instruments. At the AI tech experience zone in the "Model Speed Space" in Shanghai's Xuhui district, a plush toy named "Fuzai" stole the spotlight. Powered by a bionic memory system, it logs daily interactions to understand user preferences, stressors, and emotional nuances.

Meanwhile, in Zhangjiang AI Innovation Town in Shanghai's Pudong New Area, an "app store" displayed over 500 AI applications alongside desktop companion robots and smart eyewear.

By embedding LLMs directly into hardware, these devices are sketching a visible blueprint for future living. Shanghai is already capitalizing on this momentum, accelerating the deployment of AI wearables and devices to push its local smart terminal industry past 300 billion yuan by 2027.

Trend 3: Embodied intelligence bridges digital, physical worlds

The initial wave of generative AI was primarily felt in knowledge work -- office productivity, content creation, and customer service. Today, WAIC highlights a decisive pivot toward deep industrial integration. AI is now penetrating complex production lines, heavy industrial sites, and critical decision-making frameworks across manufacturing, energy, and healthcare.

At the conference, Shanghai-based YobiAI Intelligent Technology unveiled a compact AI safety box. Connected to factory cameras and heavy equipment controllers, it intelligently identifies injury risks and takes preventive measures. For instance, if the box detects a worker might cut his finger, it can shut down the equipment within 60 to 80 milliseconds.

Previously, humanoid robots mostly attracted attention through performances like singing and dancing. This year, the focus has shifted decisively toward real-world tasks and collaborative operations. Chinese embodied AI company AGIBOT demonstrated its Genie G2 robot autonomously handling security screening and customer service for the Guangzhou Metro. Furthermore, a fleet of 60 AGIBOT robots deployed across the WAIC venue provided real-time navigation and public services.

On a macro level, China has established over 30 national AI application pilot bases, driving the AI penetration rate in key industries past 80 percent. Manufacturing has emerged as the primary battleground, with over 30 percent of major industrial enterprises now deploying AI applications.

Trend 4: Inclusive ecosystems empower a new generation of innovators

The concentrated emergence of young developers and early-stage startups has become a defining force at WAIC. From independent developer challenges to venture capital ecosystems and youth tech innovation events, WAIC is increasingly carving out space for innovators outside of tech giants.

The inaugural "OPC Independent Pioneer Challenge" at WAIC 2026 focused entirely on "originality, open source, and individual creators," providing a massive platform for solo developers. Meanwhile, the "WAIC Future Tech" VC matrix curated nearly 180 high-potential projects from over 1,200 global entries. Notably, over 70 percent of these teams were founded less than three years ago, and more than half of the founders were born in the 1990s.

For early-stage startups, the hardest hurdle isn't just technology -- it's gaining visibility and market validation. WAIC Future Tech bridges this gap, having previously facilitated 2,000 matchmaking sessions and secured 268 million yuan in intended orders.

From entrepreneurs to independent developers and youth innovators, WAIC presents a more open AI innovation ecosystem. Lower development barriers, faster product validation, and a more inclusive innovation soil are becoming the new normal for AI startups.

Trend 5: Global governance transitions from blueprints to shared practices

WAIC is no longer just a tech expo; it has evolved into a critical node for international AI governance and multilateral cooperation. This year's conference drew senior diplomats and delegates from dozens of nations to align on AI safety standards and collaborative frameworks.

The event yielded concrete institutional milestones. On Thursday, representatives from 29 countries gathered to sign an agreement establishing the World Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Organization (WAICO), an independent intergovernmental international organization headquartered in Shanghai. On July 17, China released an action plan on AI cooperation and development, underscoring its broader efforts to strengthen international collaboration and bridge the digital divide.

Also unveiled was the third consecutive edition of "AI from China Benefits the World", a case study collection highlighting China's international AI cooperation. Produced by China Economic Information Service (CEIS) under the guidance of the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), the publication showcases tangible global practices.

From stronger infrastructure and more practical industrial scenarios to a more open innovation ecosystem and broader global cooperation, the signal sent by WAIC 2026 is clear: AI is accelerating its journey toward practical application and positive societal impact.
